What do our doctors recommend and why?
Our recommendations are based off of the AREDS and AREDS2 studies, which were conducted on patients with macular degeneration. One of the objectives was to determine if nutritional supplementation (antioxidants) or Zinc was beneficial in patients with macular degeneration (ARMD, AMD).
What is the original AREDS formulation?
- 500 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C
- 400 international units of vitamin E
- 15 mg beta-carotene*
- 80 mg zinc as zinc oxide
- 2 mg copper as cupric oxide
*(Supplementation without beta carotene is preferable for patients who smoke because beta carotene has been shown to increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers.)*
What modifications were tested in AREDS2?
- 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin
- 350 mg DHA and 650 mg EPA
- No beta-carotene
- 25 mg zinc
We recommend the following combination of nutritional supplementation:
-
-
- Vitamin C — 120 mg
- Vitamin E — 60 IU
- Zinc — 15 mg
- Fish Oil — 250 mg
- Alpha Lipoic Acid — 10 mg
- Mixed Tocopherols — 6 mg
- Lutein — 4 mg
- Zeaxanthine — 2 mg
